Dichos Ticos

I've been here for a almost two months so clearly I'm learning a lot. I wanted to share some of the sayings they use here. Some of you don't care but to me, I think its an awesome part of the culture.

1. mae : pronoun // their form of dude, man, friend whatever, i hear it more than any other word. ¿Como está, mae?

2. ¿alchile, mae? : interjection // it means really? or are you serious? Tengo tres ojos. ¿alchile, mae?

3. ¡manda pa' (short for para) mandarle! : phrase // use this when you are upset with someone, it  sort of means "bring it", I use it with my tico friends for jokes.

4. ¿dónde vive para ir a dejarlo(a)? : phrase // use this when someone is stuck up or saying something crazy, basically like "get that out of here"

5. eso : interjection // used commonly when someone does something great or right. i use it a lot in dance class when she tells us to shake our hips and someone busts it out. ¡Esoooo es!

6. tuanis : adjective // means "cool" or "awesome" !Que tuanis mae!

7. diay : filler // don't really get this one yet but its used a lot in the shortened form of "di"

8. digamos : filler // used a lot after "bueno" to start or explain a thought, sort of like "lets say" or "for example"  bueno, digamos, hay tres chicas en el bar

9. eso es otro cien pesos : phrase // means "thats another story" Me gustar saber pero estuidar es otro cien pesos

10. ¿que es la vara, mae? : phrase // means "whats the deal/problem"

and of course,

¡pura vida! : phrase, interjection, questions, adjective, filler..... // pretty much everything in Costa Rica is Pura Vida ¿Pura vida, mae? si, Pura Vida, Eso es pura vida, ¡PURA VIDA!

Well, there you have it.. a few words I've learned since I've been here.. now to make them part of my everyday vocabulary! (eso es OTRO CIEN PESOS) :)
